Lasting six years and one day, the Second World War started on 1 September 1939 with Hitler's invasion of Poland and ended with the Japanese surrender on 2 September 1945.

February 4-11, 1945: Yalta Conference meeting of FDR, Churchill, Stalin marks the beginning of the Cold War Era. The conference handed control of Eastern Europe to the Soviet Union. This period includes the 19 year long Vietnam Conflict. The collapse of the Soviet Union on August of 1991 marks the end of this era.

The Post Cold War era begins with the demise of the Soviet Union.
